Manuel Ortiz

Manuel is sociologist, journalist and photographer. For the last 10 years, he has focused on documenting stories related to immigrants, human rights, organized crime, lifestyles and the social impacts of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

He has worked in Mexico, USA and Japan. He is currently head of the Publications Department at the Political and Social Science Faculty at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he is also professor in the Department of Communication.

He was born in Mexico City in 1975. He graduated in sociology from UNAM.

He studied photography at UNAM, social development at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Advance Studies (ITESM) and studied Corporate Social Responsibility
at the University Iberoamericana. He has taken courses in multimedia at San Francisco
State University and San Jose State University in California. And he has been invited to be instructor for a multimedia documentary photo workshop at Loyola University in New Orleans and Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California.

As a sociologist, he has conducted studies and consulted for some lawyers in the United States representing immigrants in the process of deportation or political asylum.

He was the editor of the community newspaper Alianza News and the magazine Enfoque for two years (2007 to 2009), both published in San Jose, Calif. During this time, Alianza received numerous journalism awards and Enfoque was recognized by the National Association of Hispanic Publications as the best Hispanic magazine in the United States.

In addition to Alianza and Enfoque, his articles and/or photographs have appeared in La Jornada, Proceso, Contralínea, El Centro, La Mirada, El Campirano, La Opinión, La Raza, El Tecolote, Cerca de Ti, Todo para ti, Hecho en California Magazine, El Mensajero, San Francisco Chronicle, the book “Sí Se Puede: El movimiento de los hispanos que cambiará a Estados Unidos” (Yes We Can: The Hispanic movement that will change the United States) by Sanjuana Martínez, as well as various European media through the agency Gran Angular.

Manuel has participated as a political and cultural commentator on U.S. Hispanic radio programs on the stations KPFA 94.1 FM, KIQI 1010 AM and on the program Noticias y Más on Univision Radio.

He is an administrator of Nuestra Mirada (, an online network of professional Latin American photojournalists, as well as a member of the editorial board for its online magazine.

He is part of the Advisory Board of Jandro Funes Velasco Foundation (
